Tuatara: (tu•a•ta•ra), Sphenodon punctatus

A nocturnal, burrowing lizard-like reptile with a crest of soft spines along its back, confined to some small islands off New Zealand.

The word “Tuatara” is a native Maori word meaning “peaks on back.” In the oral history of the Nation of Waitaha, one of the oldest Māori tribes and natives of the South Island of New Zealand, Tuatara were viewed as the Keepers of Knowledge, and the Guardians to the trails of the realms of the mind and spirit that gave the Maori people life. Tuataras live up to 100 years in the wild and their most curious physical attribute is a “third eye” on the top of the head, often viewed symbolically as being prophetic. Today, our interpretation of the meaning and symbolism of the word “Tuatara” is embedded in the Mission Statement and Vision of Tuatara Capital:

“Possessing the foresight and determination to adapt and prosper in a transformative industry.”

Cannabis: An emerging industry

Driven by consumer demand, medical potential, and pharmacological efficacy, the cannabis industry is gaining stride as one of the fastest growing industries in history. Legislative change has achieved critical mass globally with medical programs approved in 38 U.S. states, social consumption legalized in 24 U.S. states and federally in Canada, and more than 41 countries with approved medical cannabis programs.

An attractive investment opportunity

  • Rapid Growth. The cannabis industry offers an attractive investment opportunity as one of the fastest growing industries in North America and one of the highest growth sectors in history

  • Well-Defined Consumer Demand and Market Growth. The orderly conversion of a large “black market” to a legal market continues to provide a solid foundation of growth momentum for the social consumption and consumer product segments

  • Globally Emerging Industry. There is momentum in the social and political acceptance of cannabis globally with more than 41 countries having implemented some form of cannabis legislation.

  • Untapped Research & Development Opportunities. We anticipate that mapping the pharmacological efficacy of cannabinoids, the base elements of the cannabis plant, will continue to open new frontiers for medical research and pharmaceutical drug development with broad applications in the health & wellness end-markets.
